Activities

The most frequently asked question by parent's interviewing for enrollment is "What is a typical day's schedule?"  This is the most difficult question for me to answer.  I follow the mood of the children.  If they are happily at play in the sandbox, I do not interrupt them because it's "l0:30--book time".  Book time may happen at any time, not at a predetermined time on the clock.  The closest I can come to a schedule is:

                                               SCHEDULE

                  7:30 - 9:00 a.m.    Arrival. Breakfast served before 8:30.

8:00 - l2:00           Inside, playroom, and outside (weather permitting)

                  12:00 - 1:00          Lunch

                  1:30 - 3:30            Nap

                  3:30                     Snack

4:00 - 5:30            Inside or outside (weather permitting)

                  4:30 - 5:30            Pickup

Throughout the course of the day and week, most all areas are covered.  We move in and out of these areas at the children's pace.  Most activities are available for exploration throughout the day.  Children are allowed to freely investigate with certain boundaries of sharing and cleaning up.

To ensure proper supervision for all children, we are all in the same area (inside, outside, etc.) at the same time.  We move from playroom to outside as a group.

I feel these young preschool years are best served by a variety of materials and activities.  The children have an entire lifetime of schedules and deadlines once they start kindergarten.  For now, and within limits, the children set our time clock.  Preschool skills and behavior are learned all day in all the different areas.  To list a few:

COMPUTER: The computer area is well stocked with preschool learning software.  MUSIC AND MOVEMENT:  Incorporates preschool skills with listening  and behavior training. COOKING: Helps with measuring and following directions. PRESCHOOL GAMES:  Games are an excellent means for young children to learn  taking turns, sharing, following directions and beginning academics of color, counting, etc.

Other activities include: blocks, books, puzzles, arts and crafts, musical instruments, gardening and storytelling.  Our current  wildlife family includes fish, hermit crabs, African clawed frogs and Anole lizards.  We are also watching the life cycle of  the silkworms.  Over the past two months, the children have watched them hatch from pinpoint size eggs and develop into two inch long silkworms that recently spun cocoons.  Everything to a preschooler is a learning experience and my goal is to keep these experiences as positive as possible.

An entire area of musical instruments is available for experimentation and creating their own music.  A variety of music is usually played throughout the day for their enjoyment and to assure their exposure to different types and styles of  song.  Two large library areas are always accessible to encourage a love for and respect for reading.
